I'm reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel, which is about the Elie's experience throughout World War Two. So far the book has mainly been about Elie's transition from his home to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. While on the train to Auschwitz, many things occur that change people. Mrs. Schachter changes while on the train ride. Other people change as well like the people that surround Mrs. Schachter.
Mrs. Schachter changes once she notices that her husband and sons aren't on the same train as her. She begins hallucinating and looking afraid while her son that's 10 should be the one that is crying. Mrs. Schachter changes because she no longer is strong for her child, and loses it. She, in a way, dies inside.
Then the people around her that shut her up after screaming "Fire, Fire" so many times change also.
They sort of lose themselves as well because they hit her and make her pass out just so that she would shut up. They kind of lose themselves inside.
I think that faith in humanity was lost in this section of the book because of the abuse given to Mrs. Schachter. I felt bad for her because it wasn't only one person hitting her, it was a numerous amount of people. Also the fact that her own child was watching this and couldn't do anything to stop it. I also felt bad for Mrs. Schachter because it must have been very, very tough knowing that your are probably never going to see your family, in this case her husband and sons, ever again. This book is scary to me and is also very sad because it shows some characters developing into becoming "evil" people.
I agree with you completely. When the men beat Mrs. Schachter I was shocked. I had to read the part again and again to process it. People had lost there sense of what's right and what's wrong just on that short train ride. Later when Elie stands by as his father is beaten, I knew that for these people, it had already become about saving their own lives and putting themselves first, whether or not they realized it/
ReplyDeleteyes, agreeing to what maddy said I found that part very disturbing how men beat up Mrs.Schachter, now people say men aren't allowed to hit women but back then just because shes loosing her mind they beat her up because it was hard to tolerate her nonsense screaming men beat her up to make her quiet down. There was no rights and wrongs, to me everything people did I found wrong, unfair, bias, shocking. great post.
