In the story, Night
by Ellie Wiesel, there are a lot of horrifying images that are told through out
the story. One of the most powerful ones was on page 6 when the Beadle tells
how Germans are using Jew infants as machine gun targets. When I read this I
literally had to put the book down and walk away to get my mind off the image.
It was one of the moments that you don’t know how to react. You don’t know how
to feel or what to process in your mind. To take it lightly and move on, or try
and work through the millions of thoughts in your head. I personally think it’s
something so strong that as a person, I need to really let my feelings out, so
ranting is usually how I do that.
So my first reaction to this was basically disbelief. I had
never experienced so much emotional rush. In MAUS, they described people beating children against a wall, but it
didn’t strike me as hard. Maybe it was because they were portrayed as mice, but
like the way that Wiesel wrote it was in a way that was like in a calm voice.
That to me is just so scary because this entire story to me is told in a calm
voice that leaves you haunted. It’s like this insanity of the war. I can’t even
begin to wrap my head around the fact that infants were used as shooting
practice! It just adds to the fact that this war was taken WAY too far and
didn’t really seem like a war any longer. The holocaust crossed so many
borders. It seems to me like a time that person now couldn’t imagine ever
happening in this world. I know how messed up this world is in so many way, but
I didn’t think it was ever capable of going this insane. Like the only way I
can imagine this happening is robots programmed to do destruction like this.
But it’s more than just destruction, it’s killings of cultures and beliefs and
faith and humanity in the world. It’s more than sweeping out a population it
really affects people’s minds. The thing that just really confuses me is how
people were able to do such crazy horrifying things. How can Nazis kill infants
that could very well be their own? I feel like in war, you kill people, yes.
But you kill people who are fighting you. This is people taking over and
killing people who are doing no harm. Who aren’t even given the opportunity to defend
themselves because one overpowering person can shut all their mouths? But the
baby, is even worse. Nazis are literally taking lives away that have just
started. Infants that represent the next generation and new ideas. How do the
Nazis know what they believe or what values they will live by? At least adults
have shaped themselves but these are like clean slates. It’s just so wrong I
can’t even begin. And the fact that Jews just to survive would do this too.
It’s like you are so self centered to put your one life that probably won’t
even survive instead of the entire new generation of your people.
I feel like the holocaust made everyone insane. Like
literally, insane. Shooting people for fun, using infants as target practice,
slowly killing Jews by burning them in trenches. WHO would do this? Like who,
besides an insane person? But it was so many of them like millions of insane
people. And the weird thing is like The Nazis call the Jews the crazy ones, but
the Nazis are the insane ones. Like duh!
