In
the boom "MAUS" by Art Speigelman is a very upsetting book, it showed
how hard it was to survive during the holocaust. Spiegelman was a jaws and his
father Vladek was also a jew. The Nazi's were cats while the mice were the Jews.
I noticed that cat and mice don't go along very well and they are enemies. And
in this book the Nazis were against the Jews, so it shows that they are
enemies. The Jews were treated very unfairly in this book, during this time
they suffered pretty bad. This book's pictures are all black and white which
makes me think that the illustrator did this to show that it was a true story
from the history and usually things back then was black and white. These colors
also show that during the holocaust everyone was depressed, scared, worried, etc.
Now I know that these people had a really hard time to survive, it's very tough
to live when you’re constantly worried about getting deported or killed. Also
knowing that there is a war going on it's impossible to feel safe. Especially
for the Jews who are being treated unfairly.
The Jews are treated unfairly is because in the
book it said "The other prisoners get two meals a day. We Jews get only a
crust of bread and a little soup" this means that the other prisoners are
getting more food and they are being taken care of more than the Jews. It made
me feel upset; they are all prisoners...so why does one group of prisoners get
more attention than the other ones? I mean they all made mistakes and crimes so
why do some get treated like they are royal while the others are treated as
their servants? The Jews don't even have warm cloths; they are freezing and
taking baths in the river. If they get frostbites they will be in pain and
might even die from all this cold! I think all the prisoners should be treated
equally.
Another reason why the Jews are treated unfairly is because
in the book it said "worthless Jews" All the other people who
volunteered for labor assignments were all exhausted and working slow but when
the Jews got caught they would e beaten and get screamed at. Also in the book
Speigelman said "I'm not going to die and i won't die here! I want to be
treated like a human being!" this really broke my heart; everyone deserves
to be treated like a human being because they are human beings!! why would the Jews
have to work extra hard and get less or same amount of food,
"respect", a place to stay, and anything else that would keep them
safe?
After reading this I noticed that the Jews were
help less and the Nazis were taking over them, they even have a good side and
bad side for everyone, the part where it said "they sent to the left, four
children was too many" If children are separated from their parents its
the most depressing situation ever! They shouldn't do this, so what if someone
has four children? They should be able to go to the good side if they have
their passports stamped. Just because they have four kids doesn't mean they
can't go to the good side.
These Jews were treated very unfair and I believe everyone deserves to be
treated equally with all the respect they can get. Art Speigelman's book
"MAUS" made me notice that the times during holocaust was tough and
scary.
