DEATH- Omar Vera 803

I recently finished the book Night by Elie Wiesel. The book is about Elie's life during World War Two. In the book, Elie suffers quite a lot after entering concentration camps made possible by the Nazi's, a group of Anti-Semetic people following the words of their leader Adolf Hitler. Hitler is one of the most well known people in the world, and probably the worst. Thanks to Hitler and his group, an estimated eleven million people died throughout the Holocaust, and this is just an estimate. Anyways, Elie finally feels the pain caused by death when his own father dies. In the following paragraphs, I will talk about Elie's reaction to the death of his father.

On page 112, Elie's beloved father, whom he's spent his whole time in captivity with, dies. Elie says something that is very mind boggling. He says "Free at last! . . ." Elie is pretty much saying, Thank god he's dead, but in a positive way. Finally Elie's father is no longer captive and is "free".  Elie finds some sort of happiness because of this. He no longer has to see his father suffer, as he did when he was beaten up in front of Elie's own eyes. Elie's father can finally rest.

At this point in the book, I was just done. In a way, this sort of cheered me up. I felt like Elie could finally have some sort of happiness. I know that I would rather choose death than have to go through all this. This raises a question though. Is death better than having to suffer through this with the one you love the most? Would that be seen as giving up on your own family?

  1. good post. I really like how you asked a question at the end,in my opinion I would suffer with my family because what if there is some hope for the end? what if everything turns out alright.
