Night

The book "Night" by Elie Wiesel is a memoir about Elie's encounters during the holocaust and the terrible things that happened to his family and fellow jews. In the end of the story it seems that Elie has nothing to live for. Everyone that he knew ended up dying in the end and he was a very sad person. Night reminds its readers of all of the shocking and disturbing things that happened to jews during the holocaust.

In the beginning of the story Elie witnesses babies being thrown into the air to be used as shooting targets for the soldiers. Usually when people shoot targets it will be garbage like soda bottles or cans so it shows that they treat Jews and babies like trash. Also in the beginning of the story when Elie and his family are being transferred from the ghettos to the other ghettos they go through a lot of dehydration and carry heavy stuff and when they get to the other place they are very tired and have been through a struggle but they didn't give up. The scene where mrs. Scächter goes crazy it was very disturbing because the son was sitting write there and they hit her over they head until she got knocked out. I thought that wasn't neccesary to be that violent I felt like they could've suffocated her. I don't think that Elie was a protagonist because in the end he looks at himself in the mirror and says I hadn't seen my self since the ghettos. The last line says "the look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me. Which means he has stayed the same from start to finish.

The title of the memoir is night and I think it connects to the story because throughout the whole story the mood is like nighttime dark, murky, and frightening. It was a really sad story and lots of the parts in it were disturbing to read. I do recommend night and I felt like it was a good book. In the story I was reminded of maus and the locations in night were close to the location in maus. They were also both memorable memoirs.

  1. Good job Darrell, I admire how you kind of compared the beginning of the book to the ending. I also like the theme you had chosen, about the dark and scary things that have happened/ taken place in Night and the Holocaust.
